DEPARTMENT OF SCENOGRAPHY
History
Two years after the establishment of the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava in 1951, Ladislav Vychodil (on the picture) and Martin Brezina began teaching scenography.
The Bratislava school of scenography had an ambition to perceive theatre in the vein of the interwar period. As a spatial discipline it was in close contact with the theatre scene and practice. Gradually, the members of the teaching staff included stage and costume design practitioners: Ľudmila Purkyňová, Otto Šujan, Stanislava Vaníčková and Milan Čorba. Its gradual change was connected with the transformation of theatre. Vychodil’s teaching method proved to be fruitful and inspiring. Training focused on individual young artists with the aim of encouraging their distinctive artistic ambitions. Ladislav Vychodil inspired the students to use wit and imagination, to seek simple pragmatic solutions that are not based on complex technology, but to apply the principle – to achieve the maximum effect with simple means. The leading role of the Bratislava school of scenography proved that the chosen path was right. The transformation of society after 1989 changed the situation. As a result of the students’ initiative, JOZEF CILLER became the head of the Department of Scenography. He chaired the department in the free spirit of “Vychodil’s” tradition until 2006, when PETER ČANECKÝ was appointed the chair and continued in the well-established tradition.
